Shaping Tomorrow, Together: UM-Flint's Campus Plan for Growth, Collaboration, and Innovation

The campus plan at the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) is more than just a blueprint for infrastructure development - it's about creating an environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and innovation. According to Interim Chancellor Ionna Fry, 'Our university has always been a beacon of academic and community excellence.' To shape its future, the university is inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to share their visions for the next decade.

The campus plan initiative revolves around inclusivity and collaboration, recognizing that the best ideas come from diverse perspectives. With more hybrid and online classes, as well as hybrid and remote work arrangements, the university is not using as much physical space as it used to. As a result, the approach for the plan is to consolidate uses into a denser footprint.

The new master plan will be formulated with an eye toward addressing current transformations and casting a vision beyond to meet future needs on campus and in the community. At its core, the plan will revolve around the changing nature of work and education. As Director of Facilities and Operations George Hakim notes, 'Our campus and the surrounding area of downtown Flint have experienced remarkable physical changes since the last time we engaged in this exercise in 2010-11.'

The new master plan aims to create a framework that guides decision-making involving the physical campus over the next decade. In recognizing the dynamic shifts in education, technology, and the evolving needs of its diverse population, UM-Flint is reaching out to its students, faculty, staff, and the community at large to solicit their insights and ideas for shaping the university's future.
